Why Artificial Sun Devices are not Good for your Skin
Updated: Jun 24, 2019
Did you know?
The WHO (World Health Organization) included Artificial tanning devices such as sun beds and sun showers in Group 1 of Carcinogenic factors.
This means that UV Radiations of all UVA UVB and UVC type, coming from both Sun or artificial devices, are for sure cause of cancer.
If this is not a reason to stop using artificial tanning devices, at least it should be for using ALWAYS the right amount of UVA&UVB SPF sunscreen when exposing to this kind of radiations.
Want to know more?
Sunscreens are tested in laboratory using a device that simulates the sun. It is shown that anyone who regularly uses tanning devices, absorbs about 12 times the amount of UVA radiation they would absorb with only natural light. So solar lamps are more "concentrated".
Therefore for tanning addicted, using sunscreens during artificial tanning sessions is a little help but it doesn't eliminate the risk .
Remember: melanine is a defense of our skin, as same as the thickening of the skin! This is why "old tanned skin" gets grey and... old looking!
Actually the artificial tanning devices provides mainly UVA rays that, as you already know , penetrate more deeply in the skin and attack the cells DNA
Scientific studies show that who had only 1 sunbed session in his life has 20% more risk to develop a melanome and who make frequent use of these devices has 75%!
Every Tanning session increase of 2% the risk of developing a cancer.
What About vitamin D? Well a 300nm wavelength is needed to produce it while tanning lamps produce mainly UVA and UVB with other wavelengths. So, no Vitamin D from this.
But in winter (only winter) we can use the 15 rule: 15% of the body (face, legs and arms) exposed for 15mins to the sun with max SPF 15.
What about psoriasis, atopic dermatitis (eczema), vitiligo etc? They need phototherapy with specific wavelenght UVB, on a regular basis and under medical supervision and prescription. These lamps are different from tanning ones!
Solarium with Collagen+UV? This red light (633nm wavelenght) should stimulate the production of collagen and make the skin younger looking. But the scientific studies are made on this 633nm wavelenght alone, so we can assume that the collagen is damaged by the UV but then is replaced thanks to the Red Light so they actually neutralize each other. There are now 2 kind of radiation together with no scientific proof of a real positive result.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is part of the World Health Organization (WHO). One of its major goals is to identify causes of cancer.
In the past 30 years, the IARC has evaluated the cancer-causing potential of more than 900 likely candidates, placing them into one of the following groups:
Group 1: Carcinogenic to humans
Group 2A: Probably carcinogenic to humans
Group 2B: Possibly carcinogenic to humans
Group 3: Unclassifiable as to carcinogenicity in humans
Group 4: Probably not carcinogenic to humans
So Sun and Tanning devices are in Group 1 together with tobacco, alcoholic beverages, processed MEAT (Sausages, hot dogs, salami, ham, cured bacon, salted and cured meat, corned beef, smoked meat, dried meat, beef jerky, canned meat ), asbestos, formaldehyde, some Hepatitis virus, Some HPV, HIV type 1, Plutonium and lot other bad factors.
Is tanning really so Important to you?
